No Blackjack in Montana
We won’t be adding Montana to the list of states that legalized blackjack, at least not in the near future. Legislation that would have legalized the popular casino game had gained momentum, but was killed in a committee on Thursday.
The Senate Finance and Claims Committee voted to table the bill, which means to indefinitely postpone debate on it. The vote to table the bill came after a brief hearing in which opposition to the bill, which included nonprofit charities and bar owners, spoke of their worries that blackjack would lead to increased crime, gambling addiction and other social problems.
The bill, House Bill 423, passed the state House of Representatives with little debate, but opposition slowly grew and became enough of a factor to lead to a tabling of the bill in the Senate. Montana has small casinos that offer slots, but no table games. Senator Douglas Palagi said that the casinos “don’t have the resources to operate a blackjack table.”
Senator Tony Belcourt, who sponsored the bill, said that allowing blackjack in the state would avoid losing money outside the state as residents fly to Las Vegas to play casino games. He also pointed out that a portion of the tax revenue from Togel Singapore legalizing blackjack would be earmarked for social services, those same services opponents are worried about being affected by allowing the game. There is still a chance that the bill could be reintroduced for debate in the Senate during this term, but in all likelihood it is dead until at least the next session.
Vrabel Arrested Over Casino Bar Tab
I’ve said this more than once, but I’ll say it again to make sure it’s clear: The casino is one of the worst places in the world to commit a crime. That is because security is tight and every inch of the casino is under video surveillance. If you do something wrong, the chances of being caught are pretty high. Despite that, NFL linebacker Mike Vravel was arrested this week for an incident at a casino that apparently was the result of a disputed bar tab.
At 5:30 AM on Monday, Vrabel was arrested and charged with felony theft. He had been playing blackjack and other casino games at the Belterra Casino in Florence, Indiana. The millionaire easily posted his $600 bond and was released from jail five hours later.
At the time, there were few details on the matter, with Vrabel only offering that the arrest was the result of an “unfortunate misunderstanding.” Now NBC Sports is reporting that the incident involved a disagreement over the bar tab at a casino deli. According to other reports, the gaming commission agents saw Vrabel take beer from the deli without paying for it (maybe he thought it was a comp).
Upon his arrest, Vrabel was charged with a Class D felony. Even if he only stole a single beer – which isn’t certain – it would be a felony because in Indiana, all theft is a felony regardless of the amount stolen. Prior to this, Vrabel was wondering if there would be an NFL season next year. Now even if the season starts on time, Vrabel could conceivably be behind bars during the kickoff.
